The Audi Virtual Cockpit is the next evolution of the basic instrument cluster. It’s part of our cars that manufacturers have been trying to improve on for years, but most fresh ideas don’t make it past the concept phase. Audi is not only looking into the future. They’re making it available, right now.
Audi launched the Virtual Cockpit in the 2016 TT coupe and has since made it available on other models. But what does it do?
Jack Daniels Audi of Upper Saddle River is here to help outline this new feature.
What Is Audi Virtual Cockpit?
High Tech Copilot
Allow technology to be your copilot. Available in select 2017 Audi models, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit puts all the info you need while driving in one place.
A fully digital 12.3” instrument panel focuses important details just in front of the steering wheel. Instead of placing a small window between the gauges with different diagnostics you have to navigate through, all the data you need in a given moment is on screen, and it adapts as you drive.
It’s critical that a digital display like this one is 100% accurate and that it continues working no matter what. Just think of what would happen if your speedometer “crashed” while you were driving down the highway. That’s why Virtual Cockpit is powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor.
Two Modes to Show You What You Need
Virtual Cockpit offers two modes: the classic view and the infotainment mode. Each has its own prominent features.
For the classic mode, you get a standard view of large circular instrument dials displaying the speedometer and tachometer dominant over the other information.
On the other hand, the infotainment mode focuses on more media output. With access to applications such as navigation, your mobile phone, and Audi connect, you can simplify every drive with the latter setting.
Easy Access to All Your Information
Within 2017 models, like the A4 sedan, Q7 SUV, and the high performance R8, Audi introduces new smart Multi Media Interface navigation controls. These let you control the Virtual Cockpit via the multifunction steering wheel. The “View” button lets you change between classic and infotainment mode, and you can navigate menus on the display using the thumbwheel.
Gorgeous, Intuitive Design
The large display is high resolution and runs at 60 frames per second for clear, accurate information. Scroll through music selections or program it to stream several features like Google Earth 3D graphics, traffic data, and mobile apps right in front of you.
If you’re using the Virtual Cockpit for the first time after years of analog gauges, don’t be surprised if it takes some getting used to. You might need a few turns behind the wheel, but once you’ve made the switch to Virtual Cockpit, you’ll have a hard time going back. The freedom and versatility provided by Audi’s new display is revolutionary.
